I
almost died this past summer. That's right, Chad tried to kill me. As with
most everything, it all started with a good idea: let's go backpacking.
Chad did the research and picked the destination--a section of the
Wonderland Trail in the foothills of Mt. Rainier called the Windy Gap. It
all seems pretty harmless for the first two miles until you cross the
Carbon River, at which point the trail goes straight uphill. Our
destination, Lake James, is about 8.5 miles from the trailhead, but we
added another little 2 mile side trip to see a natural stone bridge...
what a Park Ranger referred to as a 'must see.' The
bridge was indeed cool, however I think if we knew how completely
knackered our bodies would be by the time we got to camp, we might have
skipped it. There were certainly plenty of other natural wonders
surrounding us throughout the trek, and you know me and Chad: our cameras
were constantly snapping.
We eventually made it to camp,
whipped up our boil-in-a-bag dinners, and retired to the tent shortly
thereafter to play You Show Me Yours, I'll Show You Mine. Digital
photos, that is. (Sheesh! Get your mind out of the gutter!) Too bad the
viewing screen on my camera is so small or I might have noticed the big
smudge across my camera lens. Most all of my photos are rubbish because of
it, and hell yes I'm bitter.
Anyway, it was quite a slog
but we did survive and we saw some epic scenery along the way. Here's a
few snaps for your entertainment...
