Way
back in March I booked a backpacking trip to the Enchantments with a whole
posse of 8. Unfortunately the Enchantments caught fire so we had to make a
last minute change of plans. Our posse shrank to 6 and we ended up on the
High Divide trail in Olympic National Park. As you can see, we made the
most of it and had an amazing time, enjoying spectacular scenery every
step of the way. We
started our journey at Sol Duc Falls and slogged about 8-1/2 miles uphill
for our first night at Heart Lake. There we were constantly watched over
by a gaggle of goats who would have been more than happy to eat our lunch
had we dropped our guard. Speaking
of lunch, our next stop was about 4 miles down the trail at Lunch Lake.
Beautiful place for a testicle-retracting swim, if you know what I mean.
Our camp site was just steps from the lake so there was plenty of
opportunity to cool off from the 85-degree heat. Our
final night was about another 4 miles down the way at Deer Lake. There we
scored another primo camp site right next to the lake. Considering the
sunny skies and scorching temperatures, the cold water wasn't going to
hold us back. The hike
back to the trailhead was a doddle and it completed our ~18 mile loop. Of
course we were all very pleased with ourselves for schleping 40-pound
packs for four days, so top priority was a celebratory beer and a
cleansing dip in Lake Crescent.
